Problem Space
Driving is an emotional experience

Modern in-car interfaces are highly functional but emotionally inert — they respond to commands, not context. Yet emotional state is the single biggest factor in driving behavior, affecting reaction time, decision-making, and safety. The car knows your speed. It doesn't know your stress level.

Research Questions
What we needed to know
01How do drivers currently manage emotional state behind the wheel?
02What in-car interactions cause the most cognitive friction?
03How much automation do drivers want in emotional interventions?
04Where is the line between helpful adaptation and intrusive surveillance?
40+
Academic papers on automotive HMI, affective computing, and driver distraction reviewed
12
In-depth user interviews with daily commuters, long-haul drivers, and BMW EV owners
6
Contextual inquiry sessions — observing real drivers in real commutes with consent
Key Findings
What drivers told us
78%
adjust music by mood while driving — but found iDrive too complex to use safely at speed
91%
wanted the car to sense stress and help — only if they kept final control of all decisions
3.2×
more open to ambient changes (light, temp) than direct screen interruptions during driving
02

User Journey

Mapping the driver's emotional arc through a stressful commute — identifying where Aura OS can intervene meaningfully without interrupting the drive.

01 / Approach
Enters vehicle after late meeting
HR elevated. Mind still racing. Drops into seat heavily.
02 / Start
Aura OS senses biometric state
Detects elevated HR. Softly dims dash. Gentle ambient prompt appears.
03 / Highway
Environment adapts gradually
Warm lighting. Lo-fi music. Climate 2° cooler. One tap to accept.
04 / Arrival
Route nearing home
HR normal. System confirms "you've arrived calmer." Home handoff ready.
05 / Parked
Optional session summary
View emotional arc. HR trend, mood changes, suggestions. Opt-in only.

Wireframes

Low-fidelity structure exploration for the three key screens. Focus on information hierarchy and interaction zones before visual design.

Screen 01 — Home Dashboard
orb

Three-panel layout: nav rail / mood + widgets + suggestions / map + media. Central orb as emotional anchor.

Screen 02 — Mood Picker

Mood pills at top. Sliders below preserve full driver control. Biometric status shown passively — never blocking content.

Interaction Design

Three-layer model: passive sensing, ambient response, explicit controls — minimizing cognitive load while maximizing driver agency.

👁
Passive Sensing
Steering wheel reads HR and HRV. Camera analyzes facial micro-expressions. Zero active input required.
🌈
Ambient Response
Primary output is environmental — light, temperature, music — not screen-based. 30-second fades avoid startling the driver.
👆
One-Tap Confirm
All suggestions surface as a single dismissible toast. 44px minimum tap targets in the low-distraction zone.
🎙
Voice Layer
"Hey Aura, I need to focus" — natural language bypasses UI entirely, adapting to current state without deep menus.
🔒
Privacy First
All biometric data processed on-device. No cloud sync. Users can pause, review history, or wipe data at any time.
📊
Adaptive Learning
System learns accepted vs. rejected suggestions over 30 drives — reducing unnecessary prompts as personalization improves.
06

Outcomes

Prototype tested with 8 participants in a simulated BMW iX interior. 30-minute sessions, pre/post surveys, biometric comparison.

34%
Reduction in reported stress levels post-drive vs. control group
87%
Accepted at least one Aura OS suggestion during the session
4.6/5
"I felt in control of the system at all times" — average trust score
92%
Would want this in their next BMW — up from 41% pre-prototype
